Virtual ‘Being With’ Gatherings are being offered to Caregivers of Children with FASD

MFCI is happy to share that there will be 2 Virtual ‘Being With’ gatherings for caregivers of children with FASD offered in May 2020.

As a parent of a child with FASD myself, I often long to make connections with others who have that inner knowing of what life is like when an FASD diagnosis is part of daily living.

Very similar to a ‘sharing circle’ or ‘holding space’, our ‘being with’ gathering is about being fully present and authentic with each other.  We will have the opportunity to talk about our situations, frustrations, joys, disappointments, and successes without judgement or expectations.  Through this sharing exercise, we can purge our emotions in a safe and understanding environment and rejuvenate our well-being.

– Lisa Balcaen, caregiver

Format:  Maximum of 10 people; one person at a time will take turns speaking; NO pressure – participants are welcome to choose to only listen; there are no right or wrong ways to express yourself

Who:  Caregivers of children with FASD (any age, including adult children)

When:

o   Session 1:  Thursday May 7, 2020 from 7pm – 8pm (Central time)

o   Session 2:  Thursday May 21, 2020 from 7pm – 8pm (Central time)

o   You may register for only one session or both

Where:  Virtual on Zoom (I will send you a link once you have registered)

Cost:  Free (during COVID social distancing protocols)

PLEASE REGISTER by emailing Lisa at earthchildinc@gmail.com

Please indicate: Session #, Name of participants, ages of children in your care, and confirm the email address you would like the Zoom link sent to

NOTE:  The ‘being with’ group is not intended as a space for advice or sharing strategies, rather, for supporting the psychological warfare associated with living in a family with FASD.  If FASD education, resource, or strategy support is what you are looking for, please schedule a one to one consulting appointment with me and we can work together through your specific goals.  (consulting fees are $75 per hour; however, if this doesn’t fit your budget, please talk with me about what might work better for you at this time.  Only virtual services or social distancing outdoor in person in Lorette, MB are currently available.)

Also NOTE: The views and opinions expressed within the caregiver session are those of the attendees and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Manitoba FASD Coalition Inc.

It is with heavy hearts…

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of Elder, Velma Orvis, who passed away April 24th, 2020.

With Thanks and Gratitude

Elder Velma Orvis will be fondly remembered for her kindness, gentle spirit of collaboration and unwavering respect for everyone she met.  Velma was the first Elder the members of the provincial Looking After Each Other project, an initiative of the MB FASD Coalition, engaged with in 2014/15 as they began working on a project to raise the dignity of all those impacted by FASD.  Velma was there every step of the way emulating dignity through her words of encouragement, personable stories, humor and meaningful teachings.
